Classes
We have 2 types of class offerings: Ongoing classes & Themed multi-week classes
Ongoing classes are perfect for individuals who want to explore ceramics without committing, need additional guidance, or require flexibility due to a busy schedule, for beginners and advanced students. You will not complete a piece in one class. Clay is formed when wet, edited (possibly in a follow-up class), dried, fired once, then glazed, and fired again. Multiple class sessions will be necessary to complete a piece. This is a drop-in style class (please still register in advance) that is more fluid than our themed multi-week classes. So, you may join class as a total beginner and make a new thing, or come back to a weekend Ongoing class session to learn how to glaze a work you made in a previous session. Your instructor will teach you about the process if this is completely new to you - these classes are student-led - you come to class with a project idea or ask your instructor for a specific demo. Each session is $40 per person, or you may purchase a discounted pack of Ongoing Classes below. Clay, glaze, and 1 hour of open studio time is included with each session; firing fees are an additional 6 cents per cubic inch per piece. We offer community tools, but recommend bringing your own. Members use the code MEMBER for 50% off Ongoing Classes.
Ongoing Classes
Saturdays 2-4 pm WHEEL & GLAZING
Sundays 10-12 pm HAND BUILDING & GLAZING
Themed multi-week classes are taught over a series of weeks and focus on a specific topic. Clay, glaze, and unlimited open studio time comes with multi-week classes while in session and is available from 10 am to 8 pm, 7 days a week; firing fees are an additional 6 cents per cubic inch per piece. Multi-week classes are non-refundable, and can be rescheduled up to one week before the class start date. Most Intro classes include a beginner tool kit. We offer community tools, but recommend bringing your own. You may purchase a tool kit from our Shop page. Check out the codes associated with each class description for early registration and for members.
In this class, artists will experiment with a plethora of ceramic techniques and engage through collaborative processes that will culminate in a maximalist and surrealist dinner party on the final class day. We will work together to create functional vessels to eat and drink out of and in tandem artists will each work on an independent project in which a sculptural vessel will be activated through performance and the serving of food. Rather than approaching ceramics as a medium of purely utilitarian or decorative forms, we will explore the ceramic object as a site of inquiry, interaction, and activation. What happens when a tool refuses to be useful in expected ways? What kinds of meanings or experiences emerge when an object is completed only through participation or performance?

Learn how to build a large functional form and experience the opportunity to work with a sculptural, grog-heavy, architectural clay that, once fired, can live outdoors. Students have the option of building a side table or a large planter pot that is 22" high (before being fired). FIRING FEES INCLUDED ** with a big note: due to the size of the work made in class, some students may have to wait weeks before their work is fired. Each student will make a piece roughly the entire size of the kiln and in order not to disrupt the flow of the kiln firing schedule for the studio, firings will have to alternate. Some clay experience is required, and glazing will not be covered in this class, also due to the staggered firing of each piece. Students can sign up for one of the weekend Single Classes in order to get guidance on glazing their piece. Use code EARLYBIG at checkout for $30 off. Members can use code EARLYBIGMEM for $30 plus 15% off. Early bird offers are good until 1 week prior to start of class.
