Drawing from the Imagination: All Levels

$220 | ($190 with code EARLYIMAG) | February 17 - March 17 | 6 - 8 pm | Tuesday evenings with CJ | 5 weeks

Drawing from the Imagination focuses on developing imaginative drawing skills. Through exercises designed to unlock creativity and strengthen visual invention, you will learn a range of ways to use your mind as a key component in developing your own visual language. We will work on collective and individual projects, with an emphasis on jump-starting each participant’s imagination. This course includes discussions about methods for accessing the subconscious, expanding creative thinking, and using drawing as a tool for discovery. Short art-history presentations will introduce students to historical strategies artists have used to tap into imaginative states. Although lightly structured like a college class, no previous drawing experience is required.

Class time will be divided between short art-history lectures, drawing projects, and concluding group discussions. Each new lesson begins with a digital presentation introducing the principle(s) or technique(s) explored that week, along with relevant art-historical and cultural context. Most class time will be devoted to drawing as a means of experimentation, inquiry, and exchange. Through discussion, we will develop strategies of description, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation to provide one another with thoughtful, constructive feedback.

Painting from Life: All Levels

$245 | ($215 with code EARLYLIFE) | February 18 - March 18 | 6 - 9 pm | Wednesday evenings with Anya | 5 weeks

Students will practice seeing the three-dimensional world through the eyes of an artist and creatively translating it onto a two-dimensional surface. Instruction will focus on oil painting materials and techniques. However, you may use acrylic if you prefer.

We will discuss how oil is different from other painting mediums, learning about supports, solvents, brushes, mixing colors, and the differences between glazing and alla prima techniques. Our first project will be a simple still life. Topics will include: composition, value/tone, brushstroke, and the economy of gesture. We will cover drawing topics, such as proportion and perspective, as needed. After that, students will work on individual projects while continuing to practice representational painting. We will look at the work of great painters, historic and contemporary, for inspiration. On week 5, the students will have the option to choose their best work for a show/critique.
