Painting from Life: Intermediate
$245 | ($215 with code EARLYLIFE) | January 15 - February 12 | 6 - 9 pm | Thursday evenings with Anya | 5 weeks
This class is designed to meet your technical needs as you explore representational painting. You’ll practice seeing the three-dimensional world through the eyes of an artist and creatively translating it onto a two-dimensional surface.
This class is for students who have some familiarity with oil painting, and have at least taken our Beginner level class (or an outside equivalent). We will discuss how oil is different from other painting mediums, learning about supports, solvents, brushes, mixing colors, and the differences between glazing and alla prima techniques. Our first project will be a simple still life. Topics will include: composition, value/tone, brushstroke, and the economy of gesture. I will teach drawing topics, such as proportion and perspective, as needed. After that, students will work on individual projects while continuing to practice representational painting. We will look at a lot great painters, historic and contemporary, for inspiration. On week 5, the students will have the option to choose their best work for a show/critique.
Materials needed to start:
1. Stretched canvas, canvas board, or primed wood panel.
2. Pencil (6B preferred, any will do!), eraser
3. Paints: *avoid buying "student-grade" paints, or ones labelled 'Hue.' Get artist-grade paints from brands like Winsor Newton or Gamblin.
